How can software fix a physical hardware defect on my screen?
It does not physically repair the panel. Instead, it creates an inverse luminance overlay directly over the defect. Because pressure marks and backlight bleed make localized areas of the screen brighter than intended, display.doctor darkens and color-tints those exact pixels underneath.
The user is responsible for configuring the exact defect positions and color shift parameters manually.
What kinds of screen defects can display.doctor fix?
The software is specifically designed to compensate for localized areas of excess brightness, uneven luminance, and color cast, including:
- White pressure spots and light bruises on laptop or monitor LCD/IPS screens (commonly caused by backpack pressure or screen-to-keyboard contact).
- Backlight bleed and corner clouding along panel edges.
- LCD and OLED mura (cloudy, non-uniform luminance patches).
- Localized edge glow and light leakage.
Can it fix dead pixels, stuck pixels, black lines, or burn-in?
No. display.doctor works exclusively by darkening and tinting areas that are too bright. It cannot fix:
- Dead pixels: Subpixels that emit no light cannot be illuminated by software.
- Stuck pixels: Subpixels permanently locked on red, green, or blue cannot be unstuck.
- Cracked panels or broken ribbon cables: Horizontal or vertical black lines represent severed electrical traces.
- OLED or LCD burn-in: Burn-in is permanent differential degradation where heavily used subpixels have lost brightness over time. Because software cannot force worn-out subpixels to shine brighter than their physical maximum, burn-in cannot be brightened back to normal.
Does the overlay impact CPU/GPU performance or battery life?
The impact is negligible. The overlay is rendered as a lightweight layer that only redraws when compensation parameters change or the editor is active. In normal background operation, it sits passively in the desktop compositor without continuous repaints or keeping the GPU at high clock states. CPU usage is practically unmeasurable and laptop battery life is unaffected.
When does the overlay win control over the display, and does it work in full-screen games?
display.doctor draws a topmost transparent overlay composited by your operating system’s desktop window manager (DWM on Windows, or the layer-shell on Wayland). Because of how display pipelines operate, control depends on the application’s rendering mode:
When the overlay wins control (visible):
- Standard non-fullscreen desktop applications, web browsers, document editors, and video players.
- Multi-monitor setups (the overlay maps to each display’s resolution, position, and orientation independently).
- Games running in Borderless Windowed (or Windowed Fullscreen) mode.
- Modern games using DirectX 12 or Vulkan "Flip Model" presentation, which compose through the desktop window manager.
When it does not win control (hidden):
- Exclusive Fullscreen Mode (DirectX, Vulkan, or OpenGL FSE): When a game takes exclusive fullscreen control, the graphics driver bypasses the operating system’s desktop compositor entirely to gain direct hardware scanout to the monitor. This temporarily suspends desktop composition, causing all desktop overlays to be hidden. Resolution: Switch the game's video settings to Borderless Windowed mode to keep the compensation overlay active without visual penalty.
- Secure Desktop Sessions: Security-isolated environments such as Windows UAC (User Account Control) elevation prompts, the Windows Lock Screen (Winlogon), or Ctrl+Alt+Del, where user-session overlays are blocked by the OS for security.
